Contributions of Foreigners to the Development of Tamil Dictionary

Abstract

Dictionary is very important basic factor for the language. In Tamil the dictionary has a vast history and it was called as “Nigandus”. But the scientific dictionary was only produced by the western scholars. The European missionaries came here and contributed much in the field of Tamil dictionary. They followed the European method of dictionary making. Father Constantino Guiseppe Beschi is called as father of Tamil dictionary for his contribution in the field of dictionary making.
